After a brain insult (e.g. stroke, TBI, ect) the individual can likely experience deficits in certain cognitive areas that can cause difficulties in the individual’s life. These can also impact relationships and everyday functionality. Brain rehabilitation is a type of therapy that integrates clinical counseling with cognitive remediation to assist the individual to adjust to changes. Brain rehabilitation intents to restore activities by utilizing evidenced base cognitive enhancement programs in combination to teaching the individual tailored recommendations or techniques to compensate for the deficits.

FAQ
  • What is a neuropsychological evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation is an in-depth assessment of cognitive skills and abilities linked to brain function. Neuropsychologists use standardized assessment tools and integrate the findings with other data to determine whether cognitive decline has occurred, to differentiate neurologic from psychiatric conditions, to identify neurocognitive etiologies, and to determine the relationship between neurologic factors and difficulties in daily functioning. The evaluation measures cognitive domains, including, attention, problem solving skills, memory, language, general intellectual functioning, visual-spatial skills, academic skills, and social-emotional functioning. A neuropsychological evaluation is different from tests included in a neurological evaluation (e.g., EEG) or neuroimaging (e.g., CT or MRI scan) as it provides objective data regarding the functioning rather than structure. The evaluation identifies a diagnosis, describe areas of deficit, provides tailored recommendations, interventions or treatments that may be effective and appropriate, given the individual’s set of strengths and weaknesses.
  • Who completes a neuropsychological evaluation?
A neuropsychologist completes a neuropsychological evaluation. A neuropsychologist is a licensed clinical psychologist (with a Psy.D. or Ph.D. degree) who has also completed a specialized two-year fellowship in neuropsychology.
  • When is a Neuropsychological Evaluation recommended/needed it?
A Neuropsychological evaluation might be indicated to assist with a dementia diagnosis, to identify memory problems, to measure cognitive symptoms associated with neurological conditions, to estimate pre-surgical and/or post-surgical functioning, to understand problems with attention/concentration and memory of unknown cause, to diagnose ADHD, or to assist with rehabilitation after a brain insult.
  • What to expect when undergoing a Neuropsychological Evaluation?
Typically, a Neuropsychological assessment involves 3 visits at the clinic. The clinical interview, in where the neuropsychologist gathers clinical data; a testing session that lasts a few hours in where the neuropsychologist administers computerized and paper pen assessment methods; and a feedback session, where the neuropsychologist shares the findings, recommendations and report. The time for the evaluation depends on the referral question, the individual’s abilities and level of tolerance, and the number of assessments involved.
  • What is A Brief Memory Evaluation?
Brief Memory evaluations are short neuropsychological evaluations that are targeted at the diagnosis of dementia or memory impairment. These evaluations are indicated when there are subjective memory complaints, functional impairment, difficulty understanding others or expressing himself/herself, difficulty making decisions or planning, a significant change in personality or psychiatric functioning. The purpose is to assist with the early detection of neurodegenerative conditions, such as, Alzheimer’s Disease, to provide recommendations for treatment and management of symptoms. These evaluations might be recommended or directed by treating primary provider, psychiatrist or neurologist.
  • What to expect when undergoing a Brief Memory Evaluation?
Typically, the evaluation involves 3 visits at the clinic. The clinical interview, in where the neuropsychologist gathers clinical data; a testing session that lasts 2-3 hours in where the neuropsychologist administers computerized and paper-pen assessment methods; and a feedback session, where the neuropsychologist shares the findings, recommendations and the report. Family/caregiver can be interviewed as part of the evaluation process. If available medical records will be collected. What is the Citizenship Examination Waiver (Form N-648) Individuals who suffer certain types of disabilities/impairments may seek exemption for the English and Civics requirements for the naturalization process. Psychological evaluations explore the ways in which the “physical or developmental disability or mental impairment” hinders the person’s memory, attention, concentration, and/or ability to learn. The exemption has to be “medically determinable physical or mental impairment or combination of impairments which lasted or is expected to last for 12 months”. However, these impairments cannot be due to illegal abuse of drugs. THE EVALUATION DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT THE EXAMINEE WILL OBTAIN EXAMINATION WAVER.

This dual process is achieved by utilizing a state-of-the-art Brain Rehabilitation computerized program combined with tailored recommendations/interventions. The Cognitive rehabilitation program requires a one-time fee membership that provides weekly access to evidenced-based cognitive retraining exercises targeting different areas of cognition in addition to weekly sessions with the neuropsychologist.
